Lucky Andover Couple Are Two Time “Lifetime” Prize Winners
How lucky can two people get? In the case of Gary and Mary Sherman of Andover, very, very lucky.
In March 2009, Gary revealed a top prize winning game symbol on a “Win for Life 15th Edition” instant ticket worth $5,000 a month for life, with a minimum total payout of $1,000,000. Yesterday, Gary returned to Lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill with his wife, Mary. It was Mary’s turn to claim a “Lucky for Life
” draw game second prize – worth $25,000 a year for life – for the October 20th drawing.
How did this exceptionally lucky couple become two time “lifetime” lottery prize winners? According to Gary’s philosophy, it’s simple: “You can’t win if you don’t play.”
The winning Lucky for Life numbers on October 20, 2014 were 7-13-23-25-28 with the Lucky Ball number, 35. Mary’s “Quick Pick” ticket missed the Lucky Ball number, but for matching the first 5 numbers drawn, she was rewarded with the game’s second highest “For Life” prize, $25,000 a year for life.
“I had been asleep for about an hour when Gary came in and woke me up. He said, ‘You’re not going to believe this!’ He was right, I thought he was kidding,” Mary said with a laugh.
Yesterday, Mary received the first of many $25,000 annual prize checks (value before taxes) for the rest of her life. The minimum guaranteed amount Mary could receive is $500,000 ($25,000 a year for 20 years), but winners who live longer than that will receive prize payments for the remainder of their natural life.
Gary retired immediately after winning his Win for Life top prize, but Mary, who has worked at the same embroidering shop for the last 16 years, said she has other plans. “I’m going to keep working. I really enjoy the work that I do. It’s very satisfying.”
Mary’s winning Lucky for Life ticket was purchased at Andover Package Store located at 144 Route 6 in Andover. For selling the ticket, Andover Package Store will receive a $2,500 bonus check from the CT Lottery.
