National Problem Gambling Awareness Month began on Sunday, March 1, and the Connecticut Lottery Corporation is asking for the support of the public and media to help raise awareness for responsible gambling in our state.

“The CT Lottery has long been an industry leader in raising awareness about responsible play,” said Anne M. Noble, President and CEO of the 42-year old corporation.  “Throughout the year, the Lottery works diligently to communicate responsibility messages to a broad public base via traditional print and advertising methods.  To support National Problem Gambling Awareness Month, which began on March 1, we are asking the public to engage with us in a new way to help kick start our first viral message campaign, ‘Know your limit.  Stay within it.’  This is a core value that we take very seriously.”

By leveraging social media outlets, such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, and utilizing texting and email, the Lottery’s goal is to create a message in viral support of its core value of social responsibility while also supporting gambling awareness education.

Social media is the CT Lottery’s focus for “Know your limit.  Stay within it.” and with good reason.  Twitter averages more than 58 million tweets worldwide each day (twitter.com, Jan. 1, 2014), while Facebook tops the 1.6 million mark for users in the United States (internetworldstats.com).  

“If each person who sees our ‘Know your limit.  Stay within it.’ message reaches out to just one other person by way of texting, sharing, tweeting or even emailing, we will create an unprecedented  groundswell of awareness for responsible play efforts here in Connecticut,” Noble said.  

Sharing the CT Lottery’s “Know your limit.  Stay within it.” message is simple:

• Copy and paste the message into a Tweet, text or email.  Send it to one person and become a “Responsible Play Awareness Advocate” @ctlottery #gambleresponsibly

• Share the Lottery’s “Know your limit.  Stay within it.” graphic with your Facebook, Twitter and other social media platform followers. Messaging for “Know your limit.  Stay within it” can also be found on the Lottery’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/CTLottery and retweeted from https://twitter.com/CTLottery.

In July 2012, the CT Lottery achieved Level 2 Certification for its Responsible Gambling Program from the World Lottery Association (WLA), an international professional association.  Currently, the CT Lottery is one of only eight U.S. lotteries to have achieved this distinction.

In 1999, the CT Lottery co-founded the CT Partnership for Responsible Gambling, an alliance forged between the Lottery, the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and the CT Council on Problem Gambling.
