Timing is Everything for East Haddam Powerball WinnerNearly four years ago, landscaper James Ksepka of East Haddam purchased a Powerball “Quick Pick” ticket when the game’s jackpot was rolling high.  That particular ticket was not a winning one, but liking the numbers, Ksepka continued to play them.  Recently, Ksepka finished his work for the day and stopped to get a cup of coffee at a nearby convenience store.  On a whim, he also bought a Powerball ticket using his pre-filled play slip for the Saturday, April 30, 2011 drawing.  The next day, Ksepka discovered that his penchant for playing the same set of numbers paid off—with a winning Powerball ticket worth $10,000.

Ksepka successfully matched four of the first five numbers drawn in the April 30th Powerball game, which were 6 - 13 - 15 - 32 - 41; he also matched the Powerball number of 3.  Nationwide, 615,355 winning tickets were purchased for the April 30 Powerball drawing; 11,290 of those tickets were sold here in Connecticut.

“That Sunday morning I went to get a coffee and a winning numbers report.  I saw the four numbers and the Powerball, but it didn’t sink in at the time that I won $10,000,” said Ksepka.  “After I scanned the ticket in the Ticket Checker, it was like I was seeing things,” Ksepka told lottery officials with a laugh.  “Then, I went straight home and told my wife.”

Ksepka arrived at CT Lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill this past week to claim a check for $6,850 (prize value after taxes).  Ksepka, who will be celebrating 25 years of marriage next week to his wife, Lee, said that he already had plans for the prize money.  “I’m going to buy a ring for my wife for our wedding anniversary.”

Will Ksepka continue to play his favorite Powerball numbers in the future?  “Oh yes,” said Ksepka, “I even bought my tickets for tonight’s drawing…the same numbers.”

Ksepka’s winning Powerball ticket was purchased at Cumberland Farms located at 1302 Blue Hills Avenue and Old Windsor Road in Bloomfield.  For selling the $10,000 prize winning ticket, Cumberland Farms will receive a $100 selling bonus from the CT Lottery.
