Betty and Bill Stepney of Morris Claim Lucky "$25,000 a Year for Life" Second Prize
October 28, 2013 --
The day after their 21st wedding anniversary, Bill and Betty Stepney of Morris took the day off from work to spend time together while getting a head start on their Christmas shopping. Later, a special anniversary dinner was planned at home with the family, but first, Betty needed to go to the grocery store for food. While there, Betty scanned a “Lucky for Life
” ticket that Bill purchased for the October 24 drawing in a Lottery ticket checker and received a surprise of a lifetime.
“I wasn’t expecting to see ‘CONGRATULATIONS SECOND PRIZE WINNER,’” Betty told lottery officials. “My eyes got real big. I knew exactly what the second prize was—$25,000 a year for life!” Once at home, Betty and Bill took the Lucky ticket, logged onto the CT Lottery website, and again confirmed that they had a five number match. “We couldn’t believe it. We were in shock,” Betty said.
The $2 Lucky for Life “Quick Pick” ticket that the Stepneys purchased for the October 24 drawing missed the Lucky Ball number, 18, but matched five of the winning numbers drawn; 12 - 14 - 18 - 38 - 42.
Across New England, 41,627 winning Lucky for Life tickets were purchased for the October 24, 2013 drawing; more than 14,000 tickets were sold in CT alone.
The Stepneys arrived at CT Lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill on Monday after what they described as an “incredibly long weekend.” “Most weekends seem short, but it felt like a very long, long weekend; having to hold onto this ticket all the way through until Monday to claim it,” said Bill.
As a 2nd prize winner, Stepney opted to collect his prize as a one-time cash option of $390,000. “We’re going to pay off our debt and then put the balance away for our retirement.” As the couple “high fived” each other, they were asked what their secret was to a happy marriage. Betty replied, “We are best friends, we look out for each other, and we’re very appreciative of our family. We’re very lucky.”
Stepney’s Lucky winning ticket was purchased at Towne Apothecary, LLC, located at 95 Main Street S., Bethlehem. Towne Apothecary will receive a $2,500 bonus check from the CT Lottery for selling the ticket.
