Enio Santiago of New Haven Wins $40,000 Prize Playing CT’s Powerball with Power Play

July 18, 2011 -- For an extra $1, school custodian Enio Santiago of New Haven multiplied his $10,000 lottery prize by four times on July 13, 2011 thanks to his decision to “Power Play” his $1
Powerball ticket. “I thought I won $10,000 at first because I forgot I added Power Play to my ticket. When I checked my ticket in the Ticket Checker and saw $40,000, I was so excited,” Santiago told Lottery officials.
Santiago's winning Powerball ticket successfully matched four of the first five numbers drawn in the July 13 Powerball game, which were 8 - 18 - 19 - 32 - 54; he also matched the Powerball number of 8. The Power Play number was 4. Nationwide, 595,722 winning tickets were purchased on that date; 10,761 of those tickets were sold here in Connecticut.
Santiago selected his Powerball numbers based on the birthdays of his four children. Because he added the Power Play option to the purchase of his Powerball ticket, Santiago’s $10,000 prize was multiplied by 4 for a total prize worth $40,000. With Power Play, winners can multiply prizes won (except the jackpot level) from 2-5 times the advertised prize amount. “I always Power Play my Powerball tickets," Santiago said.
Santiago collected a prize check for $27,400 (the prize value after taxes) at CT Lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill. “I’ll put the money toward paying off my house, and get ready for retirement,” said Santiago.
Santiago purchased his Powerball winning ticket at My Favorite Corner Store located at 52 Liberty Street in New Haven.
