Thanks to "Power Play" Option, Thomas Keltonic Wins $1,000,000 Prize on June 1
Groton Retiree Is CT’s Newest Powerball Millionaire!
June 06, 2011 -- “Anytime the Powerball jackpot gets to be over $50 million, that’s when I start buying tickets,” said retired lab technician, Thomas Keltonic of Groton.  On Wednesday, June 1, 2011, the estimated Powerball jackpot was tipping the scales at $200 million, so Keltonic stopped at the Henny Penny store, located at 294 Route 12 in New London, to purchase some Powerball “Quick Pick” tickets to get in the game.

Later that evening, Keltonic visited the CT Lottery website to find the winning Powerball numbers for June 1 and was completely baffled—he had successfully matched the first 5 numbers drawn in the June 1st Powerball game, 8 – 18 – 38 – 46 – 56, but missed having the Powerball number of 31.  Because Keltonic added the “Power Play” option to the purchase of his Powerball ticket for an extra $1, his $200,000 “Match 5” prize was automatically multiplied by 5 making for an incredible $1,000,000 win.  “I thought, ‘This can’t be.’  I couldn’t fathom why my numbers matched the winning numbers…it didn’t make sense,” Keltonic told Lottery officials with a laugh.

Waking his wife, Diana, “out of a sound sleep” to verify that the numbers on his ticket were a match to the winning numbers drawn, the Keltonics stayed up until the numbers were made official.   “Diana never went back to sleep, but I slept like a baby,” Keltonic quipped.

Nationwide, 1,498,086 winning Powerball tickets were purchased on June 1; of those tickets, 24,958 were sold here in Connecticut, including another Match 5 winning ticket worth $200,000, won by Walter Tourville of Columbia.

Today, the Keltonics arrived at CT Lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill to claim a check for $685,000 (prize value after taxes), stating that the prize money would help to fund their grandchildren’s college education.

For selling Keltonic his $1,000,000 Powerball prize winning ticket, Henny Penny will receive a $2,000 bonus check from the CT Lottery.
