Norwalk Resident Celebrates Cinco de Mayo with $1,000,000 Lottery Prize Win
May 06, 2011 --
While many recognize May 5th as the annual celebration of “Cinco de Mayo,” Jorlady Nivar-Vizcaino of Norwalk will be celebrating May 5th for many more years to come for an entirely different reason—as the day she won a million dollar top prize playing the CT Lottery instant game “$1,000,000 Silver & Gold
While shopping last Tuesday at C&S Grocery at 81 Woodward Avenue in Norwalk, Jorlady cashed a $10 winning “$1,000,000 Silver & Gold” instant ticket. She then purchased two more Silver & Gold tickets and brought them home. Later on, Jorlady played the tickets in her bedroom; one of the tickets had a number match with a pair of “2’s” making it a winner. When Jorlady partially scratched the prize area, she thought it looked like a $1,000 winner. “I scratched some more…saw the comma, more zeros, and then the words ‘ONE MILLION’ printed underneath it,” said Jorlady. “I called out to my boyfriend to come take a look at it to make sure I was seeing it right. When he said it looked like I won a million, too, I just started jumping…I couldn’t believe it!”
The $1,000,000 Silver & Gold top prize is payable as a 20-year annuity or as a one-time cash lump-sum equivalent. After consulting with a legal advisor, Jorlady chose to take the annuity prize.
Yesterday, Jorlady, 28, accompanied by her family, arrived at CT Lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill where she accepted her first check for $50,000 (prize value before taxes). Jorlady will continue to receive $50,000 each May 5th from the CT Lottery for the next 19 years.
When asked what she was going to do with the prize money, she paused in thought and replied, “I’m going to get a spa treatment…and then, I’m going to buy a house!”
For selling the $1,000,000 prize winning ticket, C&S Grocery will receive a $10,000 selling bonus from the CT Lottery.
